Types of batteries in portable power banks
Portable power banks do not all use lithium batteries. Currently, the mainstream types include:
Lithium batteries: Lightweight, high energy density, commonly found in mobile phone power banks and camping power supplies.
Lead-acid batteries: Inexpensive but bulky, mostly used in car emergency power supplies.
Supercapacitors: Fast charging and discharging but low energy storage, suitable for short-term high-power scenarios.
Lithium batteries dominate the market due to their size advantage, but other types still have specific applications.
Core advantages of lithium batteries
Why are lithium batteries the preferred choice for portable power banks? Three main reasons:
High energy density: Stores three times the energy of lead-acid batteries for the same weight.
Long cycle life: High-quality cells can be charged and discharged more than 500 times.
No memory effect: Capacity is not affected by charging or using.
However, note that performance degrades in low-temperature environments, and there is a slight self-discharge phenomenon.
Battery Selection Guide
Choose the right battery type based on your usage scenario:
Daily emergency: Choose polymer lithium batteries for both safety and portability
Long-distance outdoor use: Lithium iron phosphate batteries are more resistant to high and low temperatures
Vehicle backup: Gel lead-acid batteries offer better shock resistance
