RV & Camper Solar Solutions

Designed Around Roof Space, Battery Capacity and Life on the Road

The Unique Challenge of RV Solar

An RV solar system has to solve a problem that does not exist on a conventional rooftop: the available installation area moves with the entire power system.

A motorhome, campervan, caravan or travel trailer has limited roof space. Air conditioners, vents, antennas, skylights and roof racks can reduce that space further, while electrical loads demand reliable power away from shore power.

KANK supports mobile applications where solar generation needs to work with an existing or newly designed battery system.

For a useful recommendation, start with two questions:

  • How much usable roof area is available?
  • How much electricity does the RV use when it is not connected to external power?

Start With Daily Energy Use

RV electrical systems contain many loads operating for different lengths of time. Calculate energy via: Daily Energy (Wh) = Load Power (W) × Operating Time (h).

RV Load Power Daily Use Energy
LED Lighting 30W 5h 150Wh
Ventilation Fan 40W 4h 160Wh
Laptop 60W 3h 180Wh
Electronics / Router 25W 8h 200Wh
Water Pump 60W 0.5h 30Wh

The RV Roof Sets a Hard Limit

Total vehicle roof area is not the same as usable PV area. Space is often occupied by:

✔️ Roof air conditioners & ventilation openings
✔️ Skylights, satellite dishes & communication antennas
✔️ Roof racks & cable entry points

Tip: Map out the usable installation envelope before finalizing panel choices. Multiple smaller modules can sometimes utilize irregular roof spaces much better than fewer large modules.

RV Solar Solutions by Vehicle Type

Motorhomes

Larger roofs offer more PV installation area, but air conditioners and higher electrical load demands require balanced sizing.

Campervans

Roof area is highly constrained. Panel dimensions, low-profile installs, and precise roof space utilization are critical.

Caravans & Trailers

Supports house batteries while parked away from external power. Battery and controller architecture should match trailer loads.

Custom Expedition

Long-duration remote travel requires high energy autonomy, redundancy, and multiple integrated charging sources.
